I once read this list somewhere on the interweb, and I found it so beautiful, I copy and pasted it into a blank document and left it there. I came across it again this morning, and I thought it so lovely it had to be shared! (PS. I’m sorry I hadn’t put down where I’d found it… If this is yours, let me know and I’ll credit you! You have really wonderful taste in words.) Without further ado, here is List # 10, or Words “I” like to Say.

Words I like to Say

  • shoelace
  • delicatessen
  • cellar door
  • pâtisserie
  • splendid
  • iridescent

And here are a few more I found rendered upon a simple googling of “the most beautiful words”. Part 2 of List # 10.

Ailurophile

A cat-lover.

AHEM! Miss Swinton!

Becoming

Attractive.

I love this one. Always makes me think of how my future British husband will refer to me. “Yes well, when we met she was wearing this ludicrous orange poncho which was actually most becoming if you can believe it or not.” Le sigh!

Brood

To think alone.

Chatoyant

Like a cat’s eye.

Diaphanous

Filmy.

Dulcet

Sweet, sugary.

This one always makes me think of this line delivered from the Weasley Twins “Hello, Harry, we thought we heard your dulcet tones”

Ebullience

Bubbling enthusiasm.

Effervescent

Bubbly.

Elision

Dropping a sound or syllable in a word.

Good word! As my parents oft exclaim mid Scrabble game.

Elixir

A good potion.

Again, I think of Harry Potter. Thank you to JK Rowling for at once illuminating my childhood, and expanding my vocabulary..

Eloquence

Beauty and persuasion in speech.

(AKA, Barack Obama)

Ephemeral

Short-lived.

Fetching

Pretty.

Reminds me of retching… Rather opposite in meaning haha

Fugacious

Fleeting.

Not too sure about Fugacious. I do like fleeting though, so it stays :)

Gambol

To skip or leap about joyfully.

Gossamer

The finest piece of thread, a spider’s silk

Oh, Emily Dickison, you will always have my heart.

Halcyon

Happy, sunny, care-free.

Lovely meaning, don’t you think?

Incipient

Beginning, in an early stage.

Made me think of Insipid, which also a nice word

Ineffable

Unutterable, inexpressible.

Ingénue

A naïve young woman.

Hmph..

Languor

Listlessness, inactivity.

Oh!

Lassitude

Weariness, listlessness.

These past two will definitely be used in soon journal entries! Days on the Gulf Islands..

Lilt

To move musically or lively.

Lithe

Slender and flexible.

Love

Deep affection.

Nemesis

An unconquerable archenemy.

Offing

The sea between the horizon and the offshore.

Penumbra

A half-shadow.

Mmm.

Petrichor

The smell of earth after rain.

!!! I didn’t know this word existed! How perfect! I’ll have to trade it in on my list of favourite smells.

Quintessential

Most essential.

This word seems to constantly be stuck in my head!

Redolent

Fragrant.

Serendipity

Finding something nice while looking for something else.

I don’t like this one, but that’s most likely because of my automatic association to that dreadful movie..

Summery

Light, delicate or warm and sunny.

!

Surreptitious

Secretive, sneaky.

My Dad looooves to slip this word in, usually as adverb(!) whenever he can.

Wherewithal

The means.

Woebegone

Sorrowful, downcast
